Not with the evidence that exists today: the only trial that measures magnesium with an Oura ring in healthy adults found a 3.2% change in nighttime HRV (RMSSD), and that number sits below our own noise threshold even when we average 168 nights (4.84%). Given what we've measured, a ring cannot separate that effect from ordinary night-to-night noise — which is why this cell renders no verdict.

What did the magnesium-and-ring trial actually find?

Lopresti & Smith published in 2026, in Frontiers in Nutrition 12, what appears to be the first row in the corpus that measures RMSSD with an Oura ring in a healthy population and publishes the magnitude. They recruited 100 healthy adults aged 18 to 45, with any diagnosed disorder excluded from the design, and randomized them — double-blind, placebo-controlled — to 2 g per day of magnesium L-threonate (Magtein, 145 mg elemental magnesium) for 6 weeks, a 42-day protocol.

The active group's average RMSSD moved from 44.62 ms to 46.07 ms: a rise of 1.45 ms, or 3.2%. The placebo group, over the same window, dropped from 41.15 ms to 39.84 ms, a fall of 1.31 ms. The difference between the two groups reached statistical significance: p = 0.036.

That's where most summaries stop. What they usually leave out is this: the change within the active group, taken on its own, was not significant (p = 0.270). What pushed the between-group comparison under the significance threshold wasn't a robust rise in the active arm alone — it was, in part, that the placebo arm fell, and that fall wasn't significant on its own either (p = 0.245). Two movements, neither significant by itself, can produce a significant difference once you subtract one from the other. That doesn't invalidate the finding — the design was double-blind, placebo-controlled, with prospective registration, which is a reasonable standard — but it does change what you can honestly say with it.

The same trial didn't move a single sleep variable recorded in its own protocol: whatever effect exists here stays confined to HRV and doesn't extend to how participants slept. And the funding came from the compound's manufacturer — a fact that doesn't erase the result, but belongs in any honest reading of the published magnitude.

How did we measure our own noise? 650 nights, one body

To know whether a ring can see a 3.2% change, you first need to know how much a single person's HRV moves when nothing else changes. We measured 650 nights of hrv_avg_ms from one body on one ring. The nightly median was 89 ms, with a night-to-night coefficient of variation (cv) of 14.94% — that's the raw noise, before any averaging.

That noise drops as you average more nights, because part of the variation is stable from night to night (rho = 0.392) and the rest is pure churn. What's left after filtering out the stable component — the rcv — is 41.42%. From that behavior we derive thresholds: how many nights of averaging it takes for the residual noise to fall under a given percentage.

At 28 nights the threshold is 11.84%. At 56 nights, 8.37%. At 84 nights, 6.84%. At 112 nights, 5.92%. At 140 nights, 5.3%. And at the ceiling we measure with any confidence — 168 nights, six months of averaging — the threshold is 4.84%. That's the number this question actually turns on: it's the point where our own instrument has filtered out as much noise as it practically can.

The published effect (3.2%) falls short of the threshold even in the most generous column — 168 nights of averaging, the point where our own instrument has filtered out the most noise it's going to filter. Not even six months of data lets a ring, measured the way we measure it, separate that change from background variation. For this cell to render a verdict, the published effect would need to clear 4.84% at that same horizon — and it comes up short by a margin that isn't small.

The Limit

This data point doesn't say magnesium does nothing to anyone's autonomic nervous system — it says the effect a controlled trial, with lab-grade instruments and an n of 100, managed to detect is smaller than the noise a single ring produces night to night in a single body. It doesn't say the trial was poorly designed, either: double-blind, placebo-controlled, prospectively registered — there's no shortcut being taken there.

What the data does establish is a limit of the instrument, not of the compound. With the resolution we have today, a ring cannot render an honest verdict on whether magnesium is doing something to you, specifically, in your HRV — not at 28 nights, not at 168. The original trial's significance came in part from the placebo group falling, not only from the active group rising; that belongs to anyone's reading of this number. The trial also didn't move any sleep variable, and the funding came from the compound's manufacturer.

This cell belongs to the type that renders no verdict: there's nothing to arbitrate, because the instrument — ours, not the original trial's — doesn't reach the resolution the question demands. We're publishing the exact number where it falls short instead of rounding toward a conclusion the data doesn't support.
