On his retirement, the Army awarded him the Legion of Merit — one of its highest decorations. The official citation, public today, says he produced:
“...crucial and vital intelligence unavailable from any other source.”

An external evaluation found it too imprecise for operational use. The twenty-three-year folder was closed with one word stamped on it:
